About time too
This is General Design Project: a project in design that is general.
First, it is a project more than anything: ‘company’ or ‘business’ doesn’t cover it. An effort. Project can be defined as “an individual or collaborative enterprise that is carefully planned and designed to achieve a particular aim”.
Second, it is in design. Not art. Sorry. Art is good, but we try not to go into art-design polemics here. Suffice it to say that they can include/exclude each other. Preferred definition of design: “purpose, planning, or intention that exists or is thought to exist behind an action, fact, or material object”.
Third, it is general. As in trying to include many things. General: “affecting or concerning all or most people, places, or things; not specialised or limited in range of subject, application, activity, etc.”
So, back to the tautology: this is General Design Project, which is a general design project. The aim is to get together and build things, places, messages. From scratch or build on existing structures. Build ideas or tangibility. Build now or plan to in the future.
Bad design or the lack of proper design affects users, designers, products and communities, then in turn, society in general and the planet. GDP comprises of designers working on open source projects together with users, uninterruptedly making improvements to projects which are designed not to be abandoned ever, even after completion. In fact, completion of a design is nothing but the new phase into which it enters. Another vital part of the design work begins at this point.
GDP aims to be as broad as possible. Three main areas:

GDP’s design work feeds from people involved in art, politics, philosophy, science.
Build something and see what happens.
See you soon.
