On the 17th of December 2018, Generation Girl held our first Winter Club at WeWork Revenue Tower. 25 girls aged 12–16 learned web development in this one-week program; they were introduced to HTML, CSS and JavaScript and built their first websites from scratch. The outcome was nothing short of spectacular!

The students, who we call Rookies, were divided into two classes — one in Bahasa Indonesia and another in English — and taught by four mentors, who are university students and fresh graduates with tech background.

On Wednesday, we held a self-defense class, where the Rookies learned basic blocking techniques. Special thanks to Gita Sjahrir, Budi Dharmawan, and Spartan House for this lesson! Always remember girls, hands up and stay aware.

Gita is ready to show the Rookies how to escape out of a chokehold.

Another highlight of the Club was a field trip to our friends at Tokopedia, where the Rookies had a tour of the office and saw first-hand what it’s like to work at one of Indonesia’s biggest tech companies. We then held a sharing session called How I Got Into Tech where we invited Arlinda Juwitasari (Product Manager at GO-JEK), Yunita Ekawati (Senior Data Engineer at Tokopedia), and Pandu Sastrowardoyo (Secretary General of Asosiasi Blockchain Indonesia, and Co-founder of Blockchain Zoo) to share their experiences of how the entered the industry from their different backgrounds.

At the end of the Club, the Rookies showcased the websites they coded to their peers and parents. From beauty clinic sites, to women empowerment sites, it was amazing to see all the talented work they have done.

For her final project, Sofia built a website for her non-profit organization, which teaches young girls in rural communities about self-defense.

We would like to thank our sponsors Sequoia, Tokopedia, GO-JEK, WeWork, XYZ, and Nostra who ensured that the Club went smoothly and helped provide the Rookies with the necessary tools to learn. We are also proud to be partners with Kulina, SayurBox, Youvit, Ann’s Bakery, Puyo, Pand’or, and Eta by Greta.

The 2019 Summer Club, which will cover even more topics, ranging from Mobile Development to Robotics, is now open for Rookie registration! Mentor applications are open as well.

Generation Girl is a non-profit organization aimed at introducing young girls to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) fields. Generation Girl hosts holiday Clubs where girls aged 12–16 are taught different STEM topics and important soft skills like self-defense and confidence building.
