Criminal Justice Reform: Listen Up
This month Medium is having a conversation about Criminal Justice Reform, and we’re taking part by featuring some of our work on issues surrounding Juvenile Justice right here at Generation. Stories about reforming probation, new opportunities for parole, the hidden costs of incarceration, and conditions inside one county’s juvenile hall.
Being part of a conversation, however, is about a lot more than talking. A big component of a good conversation is listening to what others have to say, and we’re quite happy to have had the chance to hear insights from all kinds of writers.
There’s even going to be a series of Town Hall discussions on Medium, happening in real time.
Here’s just a few of the pieces we’ve found thought provoking as part of the ongoing discussion:
- The Sentencing Project shares some startling facts about incarceration rates, and a vision for A Bipartisan Movement for Criminal Justice.
- The harrowing story of Michael Whittington, who was put into adult prison when he was 16 years old. There’s also a companion piece by one of the teachers who instructed Michael while he was there, who shares his observations from six years of working inside the system.
- Vikram Babu uses some striking images to make the case that Criminal Justice Reform is a health care and humanitarian issue.
- The Youth Justice Board, writing over at BRIGHT, tells us how teens would change the Criminal Justice system.
This is literally just scratching the surface. Plenty of more stories can be found by diving into the Criminal Justice Reform tag here on Medium, and the volume is going to be turned up next Wednesday and Thursday (March 9th & 10th) when the Town Hall starts. Dive in and let us know what you think about these issues by responding to us here.
