Many people are hesitant to use generative AI, often citing concerns about the quality and consistency of the results. However, it’s important to understand that the approach to working with generative AI is fundamentally different from traditional AI or Machine Learning, where accuracy is a more critical factor.

Traditional AI is designed to solve specific problems that require high levels of accuracy. Examples of traditional AI problems include product recommendations, spam filters, forecasting trends, etc.. Traditional AI models are constructed to tackle a specific task, usually limited to one per model, and building each model requires significant time and expertise.

Generative AI, such as ChatGPT and Mid Journey, are fundamentally a new type of technology that solves problems traditional AI couldn’t. Generative AI is effective against poorly defined problems, such as creating and analyzing content, where accuracy is more subjective and harder to judge. What one person considers high-quality content might not be the same for another. The great thing about generative AI is that it allows each user to fine-tune and modify their output using prompts. This means that individuals can tailor the AI’s results to their own preferences and needs, making it a versatile and valuable tool for a wide range of applications.

Human In The Loop

When it comes to interacting with generative AI, the most prevalent method is a concept called “Human In the Loop”. This involves a human evaluating the content created by the AI, deciding whether to accept or reject it. Humans can handle a wide variety of tasks, but they may not be as consistent as machines in producing the same results each time, especially for specific tasks.

This differs from traditional AI models currently in use, which operate autonomously on large amounts of data, functioning more like single-purpose, high-volume factory machinery. Traditional AI models also involve humans in the initial training and evaluation of results, such as a driver in a self-driving car or a person labeling images using Amazon Mechanical Turk. However, the ultimate goal for these traditional AI models is to achieve full autonomy.

While generative AI is also moving towards greater autonomy, it’s not a requirement for working with it, and it’s not necessary for many use cases. The primary purpose of generative AI is to assist humans, not replace them. Determining what is “tasteful” or “appropriate” in a given situation remains a human-driven decision, influenced by societal factors and current events. For instance, AI wouldn’t understand the implications of writing about a trip to an amusement park following a tragic rollercoaster accident. Automatically publishing articles pose a repetitional risk, making the deployment of generative AI in a automated fashion very challenging. The human in the loop ensures the AI generated content is both tasteful and appropriate.

The Case for Traditional AI

When it comes to tasks that require high accuracy and consistent results, traditional AI may be the best solution. This is particularly true in industries such as robotics, heavy machinery, financial modeling, and other fields where precision directly affects safety and financial outcomes. However, generative AI can still play a valuable role in these situations by helping to create prototypes and proof of concept models with minimal effort before committing significant resources to fine-tuning a traditional machine learning model.

Takeaway

Understanding ChatGPT requires a fundamental shift in perspective. It’s not comparable to older technologies like traditional AI (more accurately known as machine learning), statistical methods, or programming. Instead, ChatGPT is an entirely new technology with capabilities that were previously non-existent in traditional AI. We need to evaluate the capabilities and the results of generative AI technology (such as ChatGPT) under a forward looking set of standards.
