100 Valentines for a City

Generative Art as community experience

In my earlier writing I shared my story of creating unique works of generative art for hundreds of people. The experience was fantastic, but new ideas always come and it was time to step things up a bit!

The artist thinkITEM was scheduled to speak at the February edition of CreativeMornings: Edmonton, which happened to fall upon Valentine’s Day. What perfect timing to not only create a new work for the 120 attendees, but to share with them a Valentine and in turn have them add to that Valentine in a way that that could create more than 100 new street artists.

thinkCutie2, turned into a blank slate so dozens of people could quickly become street artists.

A stack of images similar to the thinkCutie piece were printed, but this generation featured a new mixture ratio of heart shapes, and a blank space for recipients to write their message.

The talk went wonderfully. The theme was on being a rebel, and covered an artist’s path from dealing with to the process of exhibiting at galleries and shows to just to doing it themselves. A video of the talk will appear online.

When the talk completed, the images were collected, everyone was thanked.

The next morning the valentines were delivered downtown for all to see. Variation in art, variation in author, and variation in messaging.

100 new street artists were now on the scene.

I’ll continue updating this category on generative art as well as the code/idea sketch repository as I create new work.
