Community Insider: James Meilton

Tell us a little about yourself?

I am James, the Office Manager of The Generator Hub. I started out as a Business Admin apprentice fresh out of college. Starting only with the basic admin duties, I am now running both office across Exeter. I moved from Torquay to Exeter about 3 years ago and have loved being in this city! In my spare time, I usually find myself on two wheels, cycling around and exploring Devon.

Tell us a bit about what do you do?

As mentioned, I am the Office Manager of The Generator Hub offices. This means I do everything from customer service, to finances, and all other background jobs to make sure everything runs smoothly.

What events will you be attending this month (April — business or social)?

Later this month I, and The Generator team, will be attending the Exeter Living Awards Night. We are looking forward to seeing other Exeter businesses there.

How long have you been with us here at The Generator?

I have been working for The Generator now for 4 and a half years!

How did you become part of The Generator team?

I left college age 17 with mixed subject A Levels as I was unsure about what I wanted to do when I left. All I knew was that University, for me, was not the right choice. This left me to look at apprenticeships, looking for a position that would allow me to study and gain experience. When I contacted Exeter College they mentioned a small business in Exeter looking for an apprentice to help out running the office. I sent in my CV and was offered an interview. Met with Neil Finnie and within the week I was offered the job. I started with an NVQ Lvl 2 in Business Admin, which led on to an NVQ lvl 3 in Business Admin, and after this qualification, I was then offered a full time role as Office Manager. That was 2 years ago!

What would you say your favourite part of The Generator is?

The community. Hands down, has to be the community. After meeting every person to walk through our doors, I have been introduced to a huge range of people. From all different backgrounds, jobs, specialties and countries. Not one person has been the same, and means no day is the same as the previous.

If you could be any celebrity for a day, who would you be and why?

A bit out there, but Jet Li, a Chinese actor and martial artist. I love watching his fight scenes, wishing I was that good — ignoring the films with Hollywood trickery!
