Community Insider: Liz Finnie
We have some amazing people working at The Generator and in this section we’ll chat to them and find out a little more about what they do.

Community Insider: Liz Finnie
Tell us a little about yourself.
As a community-space-hopper (please can this be my new job title!), most of you will probably know me — and if you don’t yet, you soon will! Until I met my hubby, my life was pretty linear: I did a degree in Medical Biology, then a PhD in stem cells/tissue engineering (I was one of the first people to grown bone from blood — cool fact!), before working for a big medical device company developing a stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis treatment. Then I met Neil Finnie — and all has become……..quite a bit more diverse! We moved to Exeter when I was on maternity leave and I now have two lovely girls and about 5 different jobs!
Tell us a bit about what you do.
With my science background and to fit around family life, I went into the medical writing and editing field for various global companies — this work can be challenging as the deadlines are short and English is not the author’s first language. The Generator Townhouse office saved me from going stir crazy doing this work and I’ve made some ever-lasting friendships here. Aside from this, I’m now managing the Erasmus funding side of Corkscrew (training with a twist) and am also very excited to be taking on another new role as The Generator Community Manager (although Community-Space-Hopper sounds better). Aside from this — I’ve also become a guest blogger for my friends blog ‘Exploring Exeter’ and I’m in the process of illustrating my mum’s children’s book as a surprise in time for her 70th birthday — oh and starting another business in the soap industry (that’s a whole other story).
What events will you be attending this month (business or social)?
We are hosting a BBQ to welcome in our three new Generator/Corkscrew apprentices. I’m also supposed to be attending a regular book club — but I’ve not read the book (again) — so will probably just turn up and drink wine!
How long have you been a member of The Generator community?
For as long as its been around!
Why did you join The Generator?
My husband suggested it — I was quite nervous about it and thought I wouldn’t like it — but my how I was wrong! I couldn’t live without it now.
What is your favourite part of The Generator?
I think most people have said the same thing, but it has to be the people and community — also the random events that pop up — the banter — the endless cups of tea & coffee — the cakes — and being able to keep a close eye on the hubby!
And Just For Fun
If you could have any superhero power what would it be and why?
Teleportation: to be close to my family anytime I wanted and not have a 6 hour car or train journey
What 3 albums would be your desert island disks and why?
Sound of Music (watched that for the first time in ages recently and can’t stop singing along to it — this could also be top of Neil Finnie’s options too based on his singing this morning! — “The hills are alive….with the sound of music!” Zero 7 (Simple Things) — nice chill out album Now that’s what I call 90’s Dance (to reminisce about my raving in a field days!)
If you could be any celebrity for a day who would you be and why?
Daenerys Targaryen (a.k.a Emilia Clarke) — because she’s the Mother of Dragons — actually, perhaps we are quite similar in that respect!
