What Should You Be Taking To Your Coworking Desk?
Coworking can be a daunting prospect and the last thing you want is to not be prepared for your day ahead. With some memberships offering permanent desks it’s easy to get settled but for those flexible workers who like a change of scenery you need to keep your office essentials to a minimum. Here’s a list of items that I think should be on your daily coworking desk.
Laptop
Bringing along your laptop maybe the most important step of your day. Many workers that use The Generator in Exeter and similar environments are freelancers, consultants and small businesses all of which work digitally. You can’t make an omelette without cracking eggs and you can’t run a business without your computer.
Headphones
The creative, community atmosphere of a cowork space is great for those more inventive tasks or learning new skills but sometimes you need to create yourself a quiet moment to focus on getting the work done. Using headphones is a great way to concentrate or send out a subtle ‘do not disturb me’ vibe. On the other hand, you don’t want to be the one making a distraction, no one wants to hear your guilty SClub7 playlist and those private skype calls don’t need to echo throughout the office.
Charging Leads
Don’t be caught out, coworking spaces provide a lot of office necessities and the variety of people can help with most requests but your charging leads are personal. Unless you’ve got a magic Laptop with endless power, just like you need recharging your devices will too.
Coffee (or tea)
Working can be stressful and everyone needs that little pick me up; coffee always seems to hit the spot. Not only will coffee keep you fueled, it’s also a great networking tool, a way to meet the people working around you. Some of the most interesting conversations and future opportunities can be floating around office coffee machine. Here at The Generator we provide free coffee to all our members so there’s one less item to remember.
Office Key
It might be easy enough to press the office buzzer and have a friendly chat but most receptions are only open 9–5 and everyone takes a lunch break. Be prepared and keep your key available at all times to keep stress levels down and continue working flexibly.
Specialized Gadgets
Every worker has things they just cannot work without so weather its your camera, graphics pad or some other ingenious device don’t leave it at home.
Notepad
It may sound a bit old school but you never know when you’re going to need to scribble something down or when you’ll next get challenged to play a cheeky game of noughts and crosses. Technology is extremely savvy these days but unfortunately it’s not always reliable. A Notepad and pen will never delete your work, stop connecting mid call or convert itself to French by accident.
Business Card
For the many business owners and skilled workers in a coworking space getting yourself out there is a big part of success. Again, similar to the notepad it may sound a bit outdated but like the scouts say, be prepared. You’ll meet such a variety of people in a coworking space like The Generator, you never know when your next client may walk through those shinny office doors and you don’t want them to forget you.
As many coworking spaces are home to such a variety of people and businesses the daily essentials will vary. I hope this blog has given you a brief idea of what to bring with you, let me know in the comments if there is anything you couldn’t work a day without.
