When 2 Become 1: WeWork Acquires Meetup

Earlier this year the global coworking company WeWork launched WeGrow: an entrepreneurial school. Following this they joined forces with The Wing: a leading women only community. They’re expanding at a rapid pace and show no signs of slowing. Today WeWork announced that they are acquiring the online network for hobbyists, Meet Up.

As an individual that recently lost their coworking virginity when I heard the news I immediately took to twitter to see what others were thinking. Honestly, its mostly positive and it’s obvious why. The pair together will enable individuals to connect online while providing the spaces needed to meet in person.

“WeWork buying Meetup is actually a great concept.”

“Two community focused, NYC-Based tech firms building off each other’s success.”

Not everyone is excited however as the question of fees begins to pop up, currently Meetup is a free online community for users with Meetup organizers paying a small fee to advertise events. The uncertainty for the future is that WeWork could change this and users may pay more to be a part of the community. Will Meetup be as flexible as it currently is?

Check out what the companies have to say here:

WeWork + Meetup

“The future is real human connection. We’ll build it better together.”

Is this the beginning of a new way to unite work and play, a resourceful use of space or the end of the free Meetup groups we’ve grown to love? Let us know in the comments what you think.

Coworking is rapidly growing and here at The Generator Hub this excites us. WeWorks community is growing and so is ours. We are proud to represent Exeter as its first and biggest community based cowork space.
