The table was set for local entrepreneurs to cook up a storm of ideas as the 7th ever Pitch & Pick event concluded the Fall 2016 Evolution program on November 18th. Pitch & Pick, hosted again at the Fifth Ticket on Water St, gave the brilliant founders of the Evolution program the opportunity to educate a room full of industry personalities on the ins and outs of their innovative business idea.

Forming and delivering a pitch is one of the fundamental aspects of the Genesis Evolution program, and Pitch & Pick is where the participants put their work to the test. Each participant in the Evolution fall cohort was given the skills and practice to create a 3 minute pitch of their business idea by the end of the 8-week accelerator program. Each of the pitches details all the information the entrepreneurs have discovered throughout the program, including market potential, customer segmentation, and a summary of the interviews they’ve completed.

Angelo Casanas, Manager, Startup and Partnerships at the Genesis Centre, as well as the creator of the Evolution program, can be seen here welcoming the pitchers to the stage.

Out of all the pitches, the entrepreneurs with the best combination of pitch and data were selected to present their business to an audience of innovators from academia and industry in both the public and private sector, as well as everyone else who would like to learn more. They pitched and the audience picked the best.

The company that came out on top by audience vote was Raleen Murphy’s Caredrop, a mobile app that connects healthcare providers to patients at the click of a button. Ms. Murphy received the top prize of $500 to further develop her revolutionary idea. In second place, was Rapid Hire, a human resources platform envisioned by Duncan Wallace and Grant Hutchings that streamlines the hiring process for employees. Third place went to Dr. Stephen Gardner’s Algebraic Data Strategies, he wowed the crowed with his algorithm that ensures the collection of genetic data collection is secure. Second and third place also received cash prizes courtesy of our sponsor Pelorus Ventures, $300 and $200 respectively.

A huge thank you goes out to all who joined us at the Fifth Ticket on Water Street, including their lovely staff, and got a taste of how future industry leaders are revolutionizing the world we live in with their ideas. As well, thank you to our sponsor Pelorus Venture Capital Limited, who enabled this amazing event to be free to for all attendees.
