I learnt a sprinkling of salt water life
From animation movies my daughters watched
Clown fish, Marlin in Finding Nemo,
Jamaican crab, Sebastian in The Little Mermaid.

From an encyclopedia I learnt about
Plankton, animal and plant, that float on the water,
Nekton that swim through it, like fish and marine mammals,
And Benthos that burrow into the ocean floor, like crabs and worms.

Yet learning about them never made me sympathetic to their plight!

Maybe if we had plastic bags floating in the air,
preventing us from breathing, or driving, or running,
without running into one,
We’d be more careful about what we toss away.

Fish in the sea swim into and suffocate in our discarded garments,
Because the outfit wasn’t worn-out before it was thrown out,
If we ran into discarded garments in our air, like fish do in their water
like running into clothes on a clothes line, that would envelope us to kill us,
We’d care more for the sea life we never see.
