When I look upon your majestic gape
I desire to know your past — today holds
little interest to what once was
Only then captures my imagination

What wisdom do these boulders hold
from the days before their fissures
How many millennium passed
before you were even exposed to sky

Whose feet walked upon that land
man and beast — together or alone
before the earth trembled, cracked
before flood waters tore a path through

Were your lands ever lush with forests
or stretch for miles like African savannas
while to the north land choked in ice
or were you always so sparse as now

With all your grandeur and mystery today
what secrets you must hold from long ago
and if I could but breathe them in, absorb
then I’d capture the wisdom of your soul
