It’s a new month, which means another newsletter. But we’re also celebrating the start of a new year. So let’s recap what December was like for our publication before I link you to our end-of-the-year roundup.

We had one story for the Submission Call for holiday traditions. I wrote about how my family’s holiday traditions have changed with time.

The one constant has been the food.

Janelle Molony, M.S.L. also wrote about using melons for an alibi for murder.

Her 3rd-great-aunt had written in her diary about the murder of Margaret Hall in 1865. Janelle takes us through the court case and other historical notices about the event, which centers around her husband’s argument that he couldn’t have done it because he was in the melon patch.

In the last few weeks, we’ve added some more writers, including Dora O'Connell, who wrote yesterday about how her ancestor saved a life but lost a fortune.

Fire fighting in the 19th century was a risky business. Image generated using ChatGPT Plus.

I’m looking forward to more from our new writers in 2025. Last year, they were some of the most read writing in GenTales. You can read the 2024 recap by clicking here.

Here’s to a healthy and happy new year — may your research lead you to unraveled threads.
