Gentleness Is Like Breathing

It is self-regulating

Gentleness, to me, is like breathing. It is self-regulating. We are always regulating our level of gentleness to suit our present circumstances. Because the word Gentleness is so tangible, we can sense it and regulate it physically using our seven senses, internally within our bodies, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and even energetically.

Gentleness is Subjective and Self-Regulating

Gentleness is very subjective. What feels gentle for you might feel too harsh for me, or the reverse might be true. It’s not just a mental construct. When we become more aware of what’s uniquely gentle and harsh to us, it becomes much easier for us to make adjustments so we can feel safer and freer to shine our unique light.

How safe do you feel physically in your body?
That determines how gentle you are with your body.

How safe do you feel with a loved one who lives with you?
That might be different at various times, even throughout a single day, and this determines how gentle you might be with him/her.

How safe do you feel voicing your thoughts on social media?
This determines whether you might choose to hide, try your best to push your message across, or share without hiding, pushing, or pulling.

More Gentlenesss Naturally Comes With More Self-Awareness

In the same situations, it’s possible to practice more Gentleness when you have more awareness of how gentle you’ve been treating yourself, the people around you, and within the social media platform you’re in.

When you become more aware of your breathing, it can either become slower and deeper, helping you to feel more relaxed when your environment is stable and safe, or it can be more fast-paced and vigorous in order to help you deal with any sudden short spurts of stress-inducing circumstances. Most of the time in our modern society though, we tend to be overly stressed and will find ourselves breathing more deeply as we realign to our environment.

Similarly, when you focus on the energy of gentleness, you automatically have an improved sense of well-being as you feel safer where you are and who you’re with. There’s even an increased sense of connection and belonging in your environment. Your fight or flight instincts give way to feeling more relaxed and boosting your immune system.

Main Takeaway

In this world that can feel increasingly harsh for most of us, especially many of us who already feel much more sensitive than others, it is so important to equip ourselves with this practice of being gentle with ourselves. When we are able to keep recalibrating ourselves so that we are always treating ourselves with gentleness, we no longer need to feel defensive or endlessly attack others, whether mentally, emotionally, or even physically, in order to feel safe.

When we take up our personal responsibility to practice gentleness, we will find that we have more than enough kindness and compassion to radiate outwards to the people around us, and the environment we are in.

A gentler world leads to a safer and happier world.

This is what I believe.

Do you think so too?
