GIS and Earth Observation are two quite popular professional and scientific fields. With the huge improvement (lower cost, higher performance) of computational power, the major introduction to our “processing lives” of public cloud like AWS or Google Cloud, and last but not least the democratization of data recording (sensors that records any type of information and attaches geographical coordinates), creates an exponential rate of new opportunities (either professionally speaking or scientifically).

Just to finish my last sentence, as it was getting too long, these sensors include among others: smart phones, imaging & weather satellites (Landsat, Sentinels, Pleiades, Worldview3 [a small fraction of the dozens private and public missions]), navigation signals (GPS, Galileo, Glonass), crowdsourcing…and many others!

Someone could say, and why do we need all this technology and abundance of data? Do we need this new information revolution? Obviously, YES! But it’s not about technology. It’s about our needs. We need information to drive our every-day, short-term and long-term decisions. From the simplest question, what should I wear tomorrow? To most complex (and with societal impact), What is the risk and socioeconomic impact of a flooded river?

To answer all these, we need DATA and METHODS, not feelings and assumptions. And both data and methods are technology dependant! So, yes we need all this exponential technological growth.

So why to start learning GIS and Earth Observation? You can do it for several reasons. Starting from simple curiosity, to professional skill advancement, to solving an existing problem under a “geospatial” perspective. The choice, more or less, is yours!

If you find yourself at this point of the text, this means your are at least intrigued about the concepts of GIS and Earth Observation. Me as an GIS & EO expert, I was always fascinated with multidisciplinary aspects of GIS and EO. To give a literary trivial example, to make a simple land use classification in an image you need to:

  1. understand how a city/village are structured,
  2. where you expect to find road networks,
  3. understand landscape topography,
  4. know basic things about forestry and agriculture,
  5. understand how atmosphere can affect your observations.

And you need to know and understand all these in order to validate and verify the results of the classification!

The complexity of all these concepts and my passion to continuously learn and pass knowledge to others, lead me to the establishment of GEO University! So, GEO University is a registered Estonian company in Tallinn.

The name stands for: GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and Earth Observation (GEO). Beside being incorporated, we a group of professionals and experts in the corresponding fields. We are dedicated to create and deliver our knowledge to students, professionals, decision makers and scientists who want to introduce or enhance their knowledge in these fields.

Our team of professionals and experts will guide you through the following topics:

  1. Geographical Information System (GIS)
  2. WebGIS
  3. Remote Sensing/Earth Observation
  4. Photogrammetry

We are constantly adding new courses and new fields of expertise, so stay tuned! Our courses vary from simple note collections, books (for people who have constrained time to study) to complete lectures with exercises, quizzes (for people who are willing to dive into and extract the maximum value from the course).

Our courses are not only basic the theoretical principles of each field, but we also create tutorial courses for specific open-source and commercial software. We constantly add and update courses so you get the best of experience!

Feel free to look around our courses and sign up, it’s also free!
