On November 14, 15 and 16, the State Of the Map Latam took place in the city of Encarnación (Paraguay). There, people from different parts of the world (although mainly from Latin America)met to answer the question: What world do your maps reveal? the central topic of this year.
Invited by the cultural center of Spain Juan de Salazar and the TEDIC, I had the pleasure of participating as a keynoter, together with Fernando Castro, and representing Geochicas, along with Selene Yang.
I’ll share with you now a brief summary of the activities we carried out there.
Pre-event: Territorial and Community Mapping + web map development
12th November
As a pre-event activity, there was a free workshop focused on territorial and community mapping at the Juan de Salazar cultural center, in Asunción.
First, Fernando Castro gave us a brief introduction to social cartography. Then he showed us Umap and Tupale, open source platforms developed entirely in Colombia which allows the creation of customized forms for data collection and its subsequent visualization on a map.
Next, I led an introductory tutorial about Instamaps.cat an online tool developed by the Geostart group of the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya, also open source and free to use.
Finally, I led a workshop to develop web maps with Leaflet.js that I had prepared, from which you can find the material here:
SOTM Latam (Encarnación)
14th–16th of November
After a complicated trip from Asunción to Encarnación we arrived just in time for my keynote: The “map”. In it I wanted to invite reflection on what a map really is, what it represents and how important is to generate it from a conscious diversity perspective (of gender, cultural, functional, age …) to minimize the bias in the information it contains.
I also emphasised the need for the existence of non-mixed groups (such as Geochicas) that are safe spaces where we can feel comfortable and have the opportunity to assume leadership roles, empower ourselves, and acquire sufficient security and practice to do so also outside them.
By the end of the day the expected geo-beers, where I had the opportunity to meet other members of the OSM/geo community of Latam and some members of the organisation.
The second day started with the Panel about #Geochicas: Role and participation of women in technological communities, where Selene Yang and I talked about the projects that have been carried out in the group, and our recent global growth and impact. We also announced the opening of the English channel, our arrival to the five continents and the launch of this blog.
The following talk was entirely in my charge: #LasCallesDeLasMujeres, a technical look. In it, I delve into the technical details of the #LasCallesDeLasMujeres project, from the collection and processing of the data, to the implementation of the map for its visualisation, emphasising the technical problems and limitations found, and how they have been solved.
At the end, the audience suggested new technical ideas to improve the process. In addition, an interesting conversation was generated around the current data and project objectives in short, mid and long term.
Before lunch our colleague Ximena Teresa Yanaguaya Mendoza talked about why the streets have a different use? Feminist approach to the streets. In this interesting talk she helped us to understand from history, the ONU treaties and other key concepts, the main factors why women use public space differently. Highlighting as main reasons the work of reproduction and the high feeling of insecurity.
All this culminated in the afternoon workshop, #LasCallesDeEncarnación, where a few brave faced the execution of the project scripts, with the aim of adding Encarnación to the current list of cities.
We generated the data, cleaned it and ended with presenting the result:

The last day took us to the closing plenary sessions, where Paloma Lara Castro, Miguel Buendía and Fernando Castro presented a practical case of the use of the Tupale platform for mapping scenic spaces in Latin America.
Finally the mandatory group picture, the presentation of the candidacy of Buenos Aires for the FOSS4G 2021 and time to search for a place for the next SOTM Latam. Will it be Colombia?
In any case it does not matter, Geochicas will be there again to share maps and geobeers with the whole community.

Farewell
In short, a great meeting of which I only have good memories and positive experiences. It has been a pleasure to be able to put face and devirtualize so many people in the community. From Geochicas we will continue betting on our participation and visibility in this type of events, not only to add more women to the group, but to the geo-world, technologies, mapping and OSM.
On a personal note, I want to give a special thanks to the organisation of the conference, to the people of Juan de Salazar and TEDIC (Selene, Miguel and Paloma), to my co-keynoter partner Fernando and to Maria Fernanda Peña from YouthMappers. Without you it wouldn’t have been the same!

Durante los días 14, 15 y 16 de Noviembre tuvo lugar el State Of the Map Latam en la ciudad de Encarnación (Paraguay). Allí nos reunimos personas de diferentes partes del mundo (aunque principalmente de Latinoamérica) para dar respuesta a la pregunta ¿Qué mundo revelan tus mapas?, el tema central de este año.
Invitada por el centro cultural de España Juan de Salazar y el TEDIC, tuve el placer de poder participar como keynoter, junto a Fernando Castro, y representar a Geochicas, junto a Selene Yang.
Os comparto un breve resumen de las actividades que allí realizamos.
Pre-evento: Mapeo Terroritorial y Comunitario, desarrollo de mapas web
12 de Noviembre
Como actividad previa al evento se organizó en el centro cultural Juan de Salazar de Asunción, una actividad gratuita enfocada al mapeo territorial y comunitario.
En la primera parte Fernando Castro nos hizo una breve introducción a la cartografía social para después hablarnos de Umap y de Tupale, una plataforma de software libre desarrollada íntegramente en Colombia y que permite la creación de formularios personalizados para la recolección de datos y su posterior visualización en un mapa.
En la segunda parte hice un tutorial de introducción a la herramienta online Instamaps.cat, desarrollada por el grupo Geostart del Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya, también open source y de libre uso.

Después de un accidentado viaje desde Asunción llegamos a Encarnación justo a tiempo para mi keynote: La “mapa”. En ella quise invitar a la reflexión sobre qué es realmente un mapa, qué representa y lo importante que es generarlo desde una perspectiva consciente de diversidad (de género, cultural, funcional, de edad…) para minimizar el sesgo en la información que contiene.
También hice hincapié en la necesidad de la existencia de grupos no mixtos (como Geochicas) que son espacios seguros donde sentirnos cómodas y tener la oportunidad de asumir roles de liderazgo, empoderarnos, y adquirir la suficiente seguridad y práctica para hacerlo también fuera de ellos.
Para acabar el día las esperadas geobirras, donde tuve la oportunidad de conocer a otros miembros de la comunidad OSM/geo de Latam y a algunos miembros de la organización.
La segunda jornada arrancó con el Panel sobre #Geochicas: Rol y participación de mujeres en las comunidades tecnológicas, donde Selene Yang y yo hablamos de los proyectos que se han llevado a cabo en el grupo, así como del crecimiento y repercusión global de los últimos tiempos. Anunciamos también la apertura del canal en inglés, nuestra llegada a los cinco continentes y el lanzamiento de este mismo blog.
La siguiente charla fue íntegramente a mi cargo: LasCallesDeLasMujeres, una mirada técnica. En ella profundizo en los detalles técnicos del proyecto #LasCallesDeLasMujeres, desde la obtención y tratamiento de los datos, hasta la implementación del mapa para su visualización, haciendo hincapié en los problemas técnicos y limitaciones encontradas, y cómo se han solventado.
Al finalizar surgen de entre los asistentes nuevas ideas técnicas para mejorar el proceso. Además se genera una interesante conversación en torno a los datos actuales y a los objetivos del proyecto a corto, medio y largo plazo.
A media mañana nuestra compañera Ximena Teresa Yanaguaya Mendoza habló de ¿Por qué las calles tienen un uso diferenciado? Enfoque feminista de las calles. En esta interesante charla nos ayudó a entender a partir de la historia, los tratados de la ONU y otros conceptos clave, los principales factores por los que las mujeres utilizan el espacio público de manera diferente. Destacando como motivos principales los trabajos de reproducción y la alta sensación de inseguridad.
Todo ello culminó con el taller de la tarde, #LasCallesDeEncarnación, donde unos pocos valientes nos enfrentamos a la ejecución de los scripts del proyecto, con el objetivo de añadir Encarnación al listado actual de ciudades.

El última día nos llevó a las plenarias de cierre, donde Paloma Lara Castro, Miguel Buendía y Fernando Castro presentaron un caso práctico del uso de la plataforma Tupale para el mapeo de espacios escénicos de Latinoamérica.
Finalmente foto de familia, presentación de la candidatura de Buenos Aires para el FOSS4G 2021 y búsqueda de sede para el próximo SOTM Latam. Será Colombia?
En cualquier caso no importa, allí estaremos Geochicas de nuevo para compartir mapas y geobirras con toda la comunidad.

Despedida
En definitiva, un gran encuentro del que sólo me quedan buenos recuerdos y experiencias positivas. Ha sido un placer poder poner cara y desvirtualizar a tanta gente de la comunidad. Desde Geochicas vamos a seguir apostando por nuestra participación y visibilidad en este tipo de eventos, para sumar más mujeres no sólo al grupo, si no al mundo geo, las tecnologías, el mapeo y OSM.
A título personal, quiero dar un especial agradecimiento a la organización de la conferencia, a la gente del Juan de Salazar y Tedic (Selene, Miguel y Paloma), a mi compañero co-keynoter Fernando y a Maria Fernanda Peña de YouthMappers. Sin vosotros no hubiese sido lo mismo!
