How to intern in 2020
COVID-19 has thrown many spanners at the way we work, and one of the major challenges for undergraduates has been the impact on the availability of internship programs. Hiring freezes, office closures and budget cuts have meant internship programs are yet another thing uni (or college) students are missing out on this year.
If you’re a final year student, the prospect of entering the work force with no experience or industry contacts is no doubt stressful.
Interns are close to our hearts at Geora, and we are very pleased to be keeping our virtual intern doors open for the 2020 crop.
So, why intern?
In case you’re not convinced, here are three reasons to do an internship:
1. It’s a very easy pathway to being hired
Training and up-skilling new employees is one of the hardest thing businesses do. An internship is a great way to start working with a company, get to know their business and get that exposure and training. At Geora, 50% of our team initially joined through our intern program!
2. You will learn real skills
Ditch the text books for the real tools.
“Being an intern was an incredible way to integrate theoretical knowledge from university with real-world industry practices and cutting-edge technology. I found that on-the-job learning perfectly prepared me for a future in tech, much more so than the traditional education system.” — Cadel Watson, Technical Lead
3. Try before you buy
This is your chance to learn what you do and don’t like.
“I made my way through law school doing internships. Most of them were in the pro bono space (read: unpaid) and it was really hard at times balancing university, internship and paid work. But interning was absolutely the most valuable thing I did at university in teaching me what I did and, more importantly, didn’t want to do post graduation.” — Bridie Ohlsson, CEO
What’s the 2020 difference?
Our internship program will run completely remotely. You will need a desk to work from and a computer. Beyond that, you will be connected daily with our team through Slack and everything else will be largely the same — you will still be working on specific tasks and projects throughout the three months to achieve your internship goals.
Remote also means that this year our intern program is open to anyone in Australia and Singapore.
Note: you must already have a visa that allows you to work for the full three months in either country in order to apply.
