What is Abstract Expressionism and Why Should You Care?

When I first watched the movie, ‘Pollock’, with Ed Harris playing the lead role of Jackson Pollock, I was gripped with fascination by the gritty portrayal of this brilliant yet tragic artist. As the camera zoomed in to capture the action of painting, I knew instinctively that feeling of obsessive creativity, because this is how I make art — the spontaneous, courageous and slightly on the edge of madness, application of paint.

As each creative person, (regardless of the medium), can confirm, when you are ‘in the zone’, everything else is irrelevant. The crest of the creative wave must be ridden all the way to the shore. The words have to come out; the painting must be completed, the design needs the final touch, because we know all too well, that soon this moment will pass and the mundane will encroach again upon our brains.
