Beautiful But Deadly
Experience a Blade Runneresque City in San Francisco
The future is closer than you know it. Climate change is real and California is drier than ever before because we are no longer receiving as much rains as before (while somewhere in the East, there are rampant hurricanes). Combine this with human ignorance and stupidity, you get one of these massive fires yearly. According to smokeybear.com, “88% of wildfires were caused by humans.” Air quality is worst than Beijing’s and breathing is difficult, I saw many canceled social events because they were outdoors. I remembered being scared as a kid during the Oakland/Berkeley Hills. Now I get to experience this every year. This should remind you what you are fighting for when we ask for environmental regulations. This could be everyday life if we ignore our impact on the environment. Inherently, this is one of the themes of the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049.
One thing that I got out of this is that the thick atmosphere creates a giant softbox around the city. You can photograph toward the sun and still get details in the shadows. It yields for some amazing lighting in photos for sure. Beautiful, but deadly.
Edit — A week later it’s still smoky. Not sure how long this will last. But SF has experienced the worst quality it’s ever had.
