Background

One of the most alarming ways Nazi propaganda swept through the United States was through exchange students in various universities. The purpose of exchange students was to foster good will and peace throughout other countries. In the exchange of German students for American though, this aim has been neglected.

This report comes from the Internet Archive in 1938 and features a report from German exchange students before the Dies Committe. The Dies Committee was created on May 26, 1938 and authorized the Speaker of the House to appoint a special committee of seven members to investigate un-American activities in the United States domestic diffusion of propaganda, and all other questions relating to this. The case discusses two students who were given instructions by diplomatic officials in Germany before arriving at the University of Missouri. During a lecture covering topics about Nazi’s, the students composed a mailing list for Nazi propaganda. The girl additionally wrote articles, appearing in the Columbia Missourian, that were pro-Nazi.
