As you do your final run to the grocery store for extra cranberry sauce this Thanksgiving, don’t forget another item that should be on your shopping list: health insurance. Open Enrollment for the Affordable Care Act ends soon — you have to enroll by December 15 in most states to have coverage in 2018. The great news is, plans are more affordable than ever this year.

The holidays are a time to gather around the table with family for a hearty meal, and to spend time with our loved ones. There is so much we can’t control, and no one ever plans to get sick or hurt, so making sure your friends and family have health insurance is one important way to look out for each other.

Here are a few key facts you can share with your family and friends this Thanksgiving:

  • Coverage is more affordable than ever this year: 8 out of 10 people who purchase health insurance through HealthCare.gov qualify for financial assistance to help lower the cost of their premium.
  • This year, there is one more reason to get covered: about 4.5 million people who are uninsured can find a health plan with a monthly premium of $0. Yep, you read that right!
  • Having health insurance is the law, so if you choose not to buy health insurance this year, you may need to pay a tax penalty of $695 or more. In fact, 5.8 million uninsured Americans can find coverage for less than the cost of the penalty this year.
  • Help is available! You can get assistance with your enrollment by calling 1–800–318–2596, or find free, in-person assistance in your community at https://localhelp.healthcare.gov/.
  • Health plans you buy through HealthCare.gov cover preventive care with no co-pay. This includes free check-ups, cancer screenings, and more.

Health care is a very personal, kitchen table issue. Even when we disagree on politics, we can agree that getting health insurance to cover you in case something bad happens is a good idea. With a shortened Open Enrollment period this year, make sure you enroll by December 15 — you can even enroll from your cell phone! — and while you’re at it, help your uncle, cousin, parents, or friends enroll too.

Happy Thanksgiving, and pass the pie!
