DENVER — On Tuesday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the latest data showing that over 2.5 million people have signed up for health care coverage during the special enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) which began on February 15 and ends August 15 (Sunday).

Get America Covered Executive Director Laura Packard released the following statement:

“Thanks to the Biden administration’s Special Enrollment Period and the subsidies in the American Rescue Plan, over 2.5 million Americans now have access to life-saving health care coverage.”

“This special enrollment period is only the beginning of expanding access to health care for all Americans. Yesterday, the Senate voted to pass the Build Back Better resolution, a $3.5 trillion bill that will jumpstart the process for millions of Americans struggling to gain access to critical health care benefits. This resolution includes key provisions such as permanent Affordable Care Act subsidies, strengthening Medicare by including vision, dental and hearing coverage, funding home and community-based services, lowering the cost of prescription drugs, and expanding access to paid family and medical leave.

“Additionally, a Missouri judge told the state just this week that it must allow Medicaid expansion. Along with the record sign-ups and Build Back Better legislation, this ruling makes me hopeful for the future of American health care. The Affordable Care Act saved my life, and it is just the beginning.”

“There are still a few days left to enroll before the deadline of August 15th, so I encourage anyone who needs health care to sign up at Healthcare.gov right away — because everyone deserves access to health care.”

Laura Packard is the executive director of Get America Covered, founder of Health Care Voices and a stage IV cancer survivor. The Affordable Care Act saved her life.
