Don’t You Wish You Were Off This Afternoon
Get outside, forget the 9 to 5
(This post isn’t a rant on 9 to 5 culture, nor an excuse for the lazy, but rather meant as a push to get you thinking about your options.)
A – Man, it’s really nice out today!
B – I know! Don’t you wish you were off the rest of the afternoon?
A – Yes…(I do)…
On any given “work day” when the weather is near perfect, you’re likely to hear a conversation similar to the one above.
The longing to be outside and enjoy the weather far outweighs any urge you might have had to go back to work, and your mind is now consumed with thoughts of what you could be doing, not what you should be doing.
You trade away your life (your time and energy) in exchange for a salary thus minimizing your opportunity to do things like, enjoy the weather. Now this may seem a little extreme, and understandibly we don’t completely lose out on these opportunities, but here’s the point…
We don’t HAVE to do this, we CHOOSE to do this.
Most of us choose to work in the traditional 9 to 5 setup because we feel like that’s our only option. A situation that limits our flexibility by putting an invisible fence around Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
While his post strikes a different chord, his thought process follows suit with the point above. In a post entitled, You Owe It To Yourself To Move On, Jason James says…
If we’re going to trade away our time, skills, mind, and body, shouldn’t we do our best to create the most optimal working situation for ourselves?
The optimal situation. A situation where time is relative, and working smarter not harder is the credo. This isn’t an excuse for the lazy, it’s a call to arms for those that want to break the mold. A manifesto of sorts where, for a moment in time, your life is allowed to be more important than your job.
The way I see it, you’ve got two options:
1. What you should be doing is continuting to work in your traditional 9 to 5 job where “time is money”.
2. What you could be doing is putting yourself in a work-life balance where you can enjoy the weather literally whenever your heart desires.
