Weighing in at around 56g, a very normal egg has become the most liked photo on Instagram, beating Kylie Jenner’s photo of her newborn baby.

We don’t like to brag, but for a while, we at least hoped we had the most famous egg in the world. That was until just the other day when another egg decided to compete on only January 4th 2019. We laid ours some 7 years ago! A simple stock image of an egg was posted on Instagram with the following caption

“Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this”

It’s bizarre times we live in when at over 50 million likes and counting fast, this very normal chicken’s egg is yet another internet phenomenon. Kylie, who originally held the record of her newborn baby had her record smashed practically overnight by just 1 image on the account going by @world_record_egg. The owner of this Instagram account is still a mystery and the story looks to be evolving.

A crack begins to appear

The Egg looks to be hatching

The egg posted a second picture to its Instagram account on January 18, which looks almost identical to its original photo and already sits on 8 million likes at writing. However, the new egg has a subtle difference and sports crack in its upper left side, leading the internet into a frenzy of what’s to come. But I think we can guess where this is going… a chicken, an egg and then we’ll be liking each one for eternity to see which came first as the most popular image in Instagram history. Genius!

Further cracks begin to appear

The latest update in this developing story comes within the last 24 hours (23/01) where the account posted another egg photo with further cracks appearing. This has left fans eager to learn more, with people discussing their theories between one another. In just 17 hours (at writing) the third picture has already gathered over 73,000 comments and 4.5 million likes. We’ll certainly be following the developments of this closely.

An idea outside the egg box

While it’s unknown who posted the photo, the egg picture proves how something so simple can work, but also the momentum of those behind it as going “viral” is often not always an accident. Ishan Goel, who is from Massachusetts and a marketing guru at just the age of 19, played a role in making the photo to break the internet. According to DailyMail Ishan said,

I won’t go into too many specifics about the secret sauce, but I can say that I worked to garner attention for the page on Reddit, reached out to media really early on, and told all of the celebrities and influencers in my network to help push it.

He also added that “I would like to give all credit to the chicken who laid this egg. They were the spark. I was the gasoline“.

The term “Influencers”, which you may have heard of are a new breed of celebrities and specific to the internet and social media in general. They are changing the way we shop and use social media and given their nickname, behold power to influence their followers which in turn is proving a highly lucrative way of making money. According to Hopper website, Kylie Jenner charges $1 million per post, while Cristiano Ronaldo earns $750,000. Just for a sponsored photo!

What is an “influencer”?

By pure definition, an influencer is someone who can affect the purchase decisions of others because of their position or relationship with their audience. This can be anyone, such as a celebrity we all traditionally know, to the new breed of YouTube content creators who produce videos within a niche. It’s becoming increasingly popular for businesses to work with these, as a specific audience can be targeted. In fact, with it’s 8 million followers, even the egg could fall into this category. Instagram last year hit 1 billion active users which highlights the sheer number of users. But be weary, Instagram is using this immense amount of data and listening to you conversations, although currently disputes this.

The video sharing website YouTube attracts ⅓ of the internet’s traffic and has an incredible 1.9 billion active users each month. The world population is currently 7.5 billion for comparison. Given the worldwide access and appeal, YouTube is becoming, if not already more powerful than traditional TV and it’s only logical that those featured who garner the most subscribers on the platform are now mainstream celebrities of the 21st century.

An influencer in a get laid bed

One of those influencers happened to buy a bed from us recently (without any of our own influence it’s worth noting!) which we were very excited about. James Charles, a hugely popular video creator from New York, makeup artist and model. Amassing an impressive 13 million subscribers on YouTube and 11 million on Instagram (at the time of writing), which are simply mind-blowing numbers. It’s the equivalent of James having every person in Croatia subscribed… three times over to his channel.

He is well known for his love of design and his friend who helped him with the truly beautiful interior design of his bedroom. Tweeting about the impressive four poster bed, it received much praise from his fans about the stunning design and comfortable size. We’re hopeful we may be in an upcoming video of his new house soon.

Also purchasing from Get Laid Beds, Jamie Genevieve is a well-loved vlogger from the UK who makes regular video content for over 700,000 subscribers. She’s well loved for her makeup tutorials and other design videos. During the recent renovation of her home, which she documented on YouTube, we were thrilled to be chosen for our Low Modern Bed frame in Eastern King to be part of the interior design.
