Living out competitive drive at the highest level means we are constantly refocusing the competition back to ourselves. The highest level of competitive drive is collaborating with our circumstances and environment to unlock our full potential. It takes mental strength to compete at this level because so often, we are distracted by competing with others.

Competing against others: no matter where you are or what you are doing, there is a strong drive to compare what we are doing and accomplishing with what others are doing and accomplishing. While it is important to learn by assessing our actions based on the results we want to achieve, competing against others and comparing our results to theirs can completely derail our motivation. When you realize you are competing and comparing to others and it is limiting your motivation, remind yourself that your competition is there to motivate you to learn and grow.

Competing against yourself: This is where the magic happens. Each of us has a unique set of talent and experiences to build with. The goal is to make the most out of ourselves and the circumstances we find ourselves in. This goes back to Laser Focus…in every situation, we need to focus and execute on what is in our control to keep moving forward. Compete to analyze the circumstances you are in. Compete to take action. Compete to be open and adjust when the circumstances change. Competing against yourself is competing against becoming rigid and stuck. Compete to let go and flow.

Collaboration: Competing against yourself means shifting your mind from competing against others to collaborating with others to unlock your full potential. You are not trying to beat your opponent, you are working with the challenges and obstacles they provide to help you learn and grow. You aren’t competing against an obstacle or challenge, you are working with that challenge to build the skills you need to keep moving forward. When we shift our focus from winning or losing to growing, we unlock a whole new level of motivation.

Living out the principles of competitive drive aren’t easy. It is strongly reinforced that we are in a win or lose world. It will take effort and training to rise above that mindset to really embrace the true competition: Your personal growth and development. Just like any other skill, you can train yourself to shift your motivation and competitive drive. Start your training today. Look for areas that you are clearly competing and comparing yourself to others and reframe that situation that highlights the competition for your own growth and how you can shift from competing against your opponent to collaborating with them to get the growth and development you need to get to the next level.
