Year after year as the temperatures begin to drop there’s one tried-and-true piece of clothing that always has our backs. Enter: the plaid flannel. It’s the secret weapon of Fall dressing and somehow it always stays in style.

Tartan, better known as plaid is pretty much the print of Fall and Winter and it doesn’t only look good in the form of clothing. When you incorporate this stylish pattern into your home décor, you can expect a festive dose of seasonal flavor. From cozy cabins to elegant apartments, plaid is the perfect segue into Fall and Winter decorating.

Read on for tips on bringing Fall’s most fashionable print into your space!

1. Opt for neutral, transitional plaids.

If you’re not ready to begin a committed relationship with plaid, instead of adorning your space in the red, green, or navy tones it often comes in, opt for a soft and neutral tartan like the wallpaper pictured above. Lighter plaids are more transitional and won’t make you feel like you’re always getting ready to celebrate Christmas if the print becomes a permanent part of your space.

2. Don’t be afraid to pattern mix your plaids.

Plaid is such a classic pattern, it can easily be mixed and matched with others. As long as you keep your colors within the same family, feel free to mix plaids with stripes, chevron, floral motifs, and everything in-between. The pattern mixing in this office works well because of the red color story infused throughout the space.

3. Start a plaid theme, but keep it minimal.

It is possible to have too much of a good thing, so refrain from buying only plaid accessories and furnishings. This living room strikes the perfect balance between solid colors and tartan prints. Plaid chairs and throw blankets give the space a clear theme, but there are enough solid tones and other prints to keep the plaid balanced. Place a slip cover over your sofa for an easy update to your living room!

4. Color your space plaid.

If you’re a big fan of color and have lots of vibrant pieces in your space, don’t be discouraged by plaid. The wallpaper and drapery pictured above is neutral enough for the bright furnishings to blend in with the space but also function as fun pops of color.

5. Add small accessories.

Sometimes the simplest accessories make the loudest statements. This bright and airy living room is not decorated for any particular season, but the inclusion of dusky, tartan throw pillows makes it look slightly more winter-ready.

6. Give basic plaid a modern twist.

Being such a classic and notoriously cozy print, plaid is perfect for nurseries and kid’s rooms. An enlarged tartan pattern is painted on the wall of this nursery for a modern spin on the timeless print. The simple lines and colors are bold, yet have a calming effect on the space.

7. Go monochromatic with your plaids.

A black and white plaid print adds texture to a monochromatic space. Imagine this bed with a solid white duvet — it could be chic, but it would look much stiffer and less welcoming. Plaid adds both visual interest and comfort to spaces with little to no color.

8. Transform your space into a cozy cabin.

If you peer through the window of this snug looking space, you can see that it’s likely the bedroom of an urban apartment. The reclaimed wood wall definitely helps set the cozy cabin tone, but the simple addition of a plaid bedspread majorly contributes to the comfortable, warm mood of the room.

9. Feature fashion-forward plaids.

Pair plaid with luxe, shiny metals like chrome gold for a stylish and unexpected combination. Depending on the setting, plaid can either be rustic and undone or very high-fashion. In this case, plaid enhances the structured stools and looks posh paired with glossy gold décor.

10. Create a cozy entryway.

Mudrooms are not just for tracking mud into — they’re actually a great space to give new styles a try. If you have a bench in your entryway or mudroom, simply place a plaid textile over it, add a few pillows and a fur throw for a comfortable and seasonally appropriate resting spot.

Plaid is quite possibly one of the easiest prints to incorporate into your décor, so why not give it a whirl and throw your space a plaid party? This Fall-friendly print is forever fashionable and will carry your space right into the holiday season!
