Living in an apartment has its pros and cons. Pros: You don’t have to worry about maintenance, trash or the general upkeep of being a homeowner. Cons: You have less room, less design freedom and probably little to no outdoor space. However, if you do happen to have even an ounce of a patio, fire escape, balcony, or patch of grass, there are ways you can make that tiny space a chic and awesome place to hang on a summer day.

Scroll through for creative ways to make your tiny outdoor area the perfect place to unwind in the summer sun!

1. Stick to a color palette.

The coordinating black and white color scheme of this patio gives it a streamlined feel, making the space seem less tiny and cramped. A black and white striped rug also has a magical way of elongating a space.

2. Hang out on a hanging chair.

If there’s really not room for much of anything, a hanging chair is the perfect option because it gives off the illusion of more space since it’s elevated from the ground. And honestly, there’s not much that’s more comfortable. Add a few plants and you’ve got yourself an awesome place to chill.

3. Bring your living room outdoors.

Want a space you can hang out on 24/7 this summer? Give your patio the vibes of a living room with an extra comfy patio sofa, side table and lamp! A string of bulb lights add a little zest to the space.

4. Keep your teeny space simple.

If you have a balcony that’s so teeny tiny you’re not even sure it will fit a table, place a small rug down for comfort, add a folding chair with a cushion and throw, and use a stool that can act as both a table and a seat. A planter hanging on the balcony rail gives it that garden feeling without taking up floor space.

5. Curtain a corner.

This tiny patio utilizes every bit of space it has. A pair of curtains add privacy while plenty of pillows give it an extra cozy feel. The rolling cart is a perfect addition because it can be moved if you want more floor space. Coordinate at least one pillow color to your rug and include a few patterned pieces to give your patio character.

6. Just cushion it!

Forget benches, tables and chairs — cushion your entire patio for a space that’s incredibly comfy and absolutely ideal for laying out with a tall glass of iced tea and a book on a summer Sunday. This is a chill boho look we adore.

7. Built-ins are the best.

If you have a built-in bench area on your patio, you’re set. You can store cushions, throws and rugs inside the built-in so they don’t get dirty or wet when not in use and you always have ample seating room. This gorgeous tiny patio is even better with the addition of a macramé planter/table, adorned with candles and a teeny succulent to match its teeny patio home.

No space? No problem. There’s always a way to make a teeny, tiny outdoor space a lush and relaxing summer hang.
