  • What was your role or background prior to joining GetGround?

Before joining GetGround, I worked as a Full-stack developer in a Software House in Portugal, where I helped build and maintain ERP software.

  • Why did you join GetGround?

Sometimes in your career, you get the feeling that you have to switch up your environment and break out of your usual routine. I joined GetGround when I was going through that phase, but I was also looking for a new, challenging opportunity in my career that would allow me to grow.

  • What are you responsible for in your role at GetGround?

As a backend engineer working with Golang, my role is to help design, build and maintain all things server-side. I spend my days developing new features alongside my team, improving existing parts of our application and — from time to time — fixing the odd defect!

  • Which teams do you work with on a day to day basis, and how?

I work closely together with all the other engineers in my team: two other backend engineers, two frontend engineers, one QA engineer, and our team lead. As a team, we have a daily standup meeting to sync on what everyone is doing, and to identify/overcome blockers when needed. Throughout the week, we work closely with the product and design team to create all the cool features we’re building at GetGround.

  • What do you enjoy most about life at GetGround?

How quickly we react and adapt to constant change. At GetGround, no two days are the same, and we’re always tackling new, exciting challenges.

  • What has surprised you most about life at GetGround?

How easy it is to work and collaborate with everyone. I’ve had many pleasant experiences with all the fellow GetGrounders whom I’ve been lucky enough to meet. We’re always ready to help one another.

  • Your favourite GetGround value, and why?

Feedback obsession — this value caught my eye from the beginning. How can you improve, without knowing if you’re going in the right direction? Communication is the best way to achieve great things, as a company and individually. So that’s definitely my favourite.

  • Something unexpected / unusual about you!

I like to collect different kinds of succulent plants. I appreciate them because of all their weird and diverse formats, and the fact that they’re low maintenance. I also enjoy DIY projects, where I can learn a new craft while creating something unique.

  • Your favourite holiday

In my hometown in Portugal, for Carnival, it’s a tradition for people to wear costumes and meet downtown at night. It’s quite different from other cities as there are no parades: the only rule is to wear a costume and have fun (bonus if you make your own costume)!

  • The best place you’ve ever been in the world

The Azores. It’s an archipelago of volcanic islands where you can truly get in touch with nature. I recommend visiting São Miguel island, where you can find some amazing volcanic crater lakes. I was also really impressed by how many hydrangeas there are — it’s beautiful.

  • Favourite music band/artist

Anything really, but I groove to Capitão Fausto.

🙌

We are always keen to meet great talent! Check out our open positions, and contact Andrew if you’d like to find out more, even if there aren’t any open vacancies relevant to you currently.
