Happy New Year! I apologize for the delayed silence, but I needed some personal time to rest up and plan for what’s to come for me and Weight Loss by Pete in 2017.

For many of you, the holidays were your ‘last hoorah’ before entering the year with a new perspective on health, fitness and nutrition.

Now that the holiday parties are over, it’s time to get serious!

Today, I’m going to offer you a piece of advice. It’s going to sound contrary to what your mind is telling you if you’re just starting your quest today, but it’s what’s going to make the difference between a successful and permanent change, or another failed diet.

DO A LITTLE BIT TO REACH YOUR GOAL EVERY DAY!

You’ve probably heard this a million times before, but it’s so true!

Think about where you want to be at the end of your journey. Things like how much weight you’d ultimately like to lose, what size clothing you’d like to fit in, how you look in the mirror…

Now, unless you’re 20 lbs and a few months away from getting to that end point, the thought of all the changes and work you have to do to cross the finish line can be overwhelming. It took years to get to this point, and the physical and mental changes that need to be made aren’t going to happen overnight.

So, how should you approach this?

Simply put, do A LITTLE every day to reach your goal…

If you haven’t gotten off the couch in 10 years, go outside (weather-permitting) and go for a walk. If it’s not nice out, walk up and down the stairs a few times. Don’t join a CrossFit gym and start deadlifting 300 lbs. That’s how you get hurt, get discouraged and give up.

Instead, take baby steps…

Nutritionally, if pizza and potato chips have been your staples for as long as you can remember, look up a healthy recipe online, go to the grocery store, buy the ingredients you don’t presently have in your home, and make a healthy, home-cooked meal.

Slow and steady wins the race…

If you have trouble sleeping due to anxiety, stress or some other mental ailment, download an app like Headspace or Calm, and begin meditating. Both have guided meditations for beginners, which will teach you how to breathe, calm your mind and look at your world from a different perspective.

Those tacky 21 Day Fixes and 30 Lbs in 30 Days bullshit challenges? Those often don’t work, and in the rare instances that they do, you’ll see their success stories one year and 50 lbs heavier.

Permanent weight loss is about CHOOSING to make healthy lifestyle CHANGES that you’ll keep for the rest of your life. It doesn’t matter what your friends or family are doing (or not doing)!

At the end of the day, only YOU control your actions. Social pressure often cracks us, but it’s about developing both the habits and the discipline necessary to say NO when others may be sabotaging themselves, and as a result, may seek to sabotage you.

Don’t give into the pressure. You can do this. Let’s make 2017 great!

Sincerely,

Coach Pete
