Super Bowl Sunday Survival Tips

It’s Super Bowl Sunday, and if you’re like most of America, you’ll either be attending or hosting a Super Bowl Party tonight. Like any party, there will most likely be a lot of unsavory food and beverage options readily available for your consumption.

There a couple of different views on how to approach these types of parties:

1. Just give in, eat and drink what you will, and start over tomorrow.

Personally, I’m not a fan of this school of thought, because the ingestion of sugary and grainy foods will only reestablish old cravings for poor food and beverage choices.

2. Stick to your discipline, and prepare to succeed in advance.

Now THIS school of thinking I can get behind! :-)

I’m not judging you for which decision you make tonight. If you’ve been on point with your nutrition for a while, one bad night isn’t going to undo everything. That being said, there are ways to avoid temptation and ways to stay on track regardless of the options available at the party tonight.

Below you’ll find a few different strategies I recommend you take to avoid eating the chips, drinking the beer and going completely off the rails at tonight’s party. Ultimately, whether or not you stay on point is up to you. With kickoff not happening for another few hours, there’s still time to make the necessary adjustments to stay on track!

Hack #1. Avoid the beer. It may seem like the American thing to drink while watching the Super Bowl, but beer is the WORST alcoholic beverage you can ingest at any point between the grain content and the carbonation.

The ‘healthiest’ three forms of booze are: Gin, tequila and dry red wine, all in that order. I use the word ‘healthiest’ with quotations because they’re not healthy — They’re just not as bad as their counterparts.

Personally, I’ll be having a couple of gin and seltzers during the game, with a slice of lime added into the glass.

One more piece of advice on alcohol: AVOID mixed drinks with sugary juices, as these are often just as bad, if not worse than beer! And please, don’t drink and drive ;-)

Hack #2. Stay away from the chips. To avoid this, I’ll be bringing some organic, raw Brazil nuts with me to tonight’s party. Any organic, raw nuts or seeds will suffice.

Keep in mind that peanuts aren’t actually a nut, but a legume, which when ingested in quantities greater than half a cup, will jack up your blood sugar.

My three go-to organic, raw nuts are Walnuts, Brazil Nuts and Almonds. Personally, I’m not a fan of seeds, but any packaged as organic and raw will suffice.

Hack # 3. Eat a healthy meal beforehand. There’s going to be quite a spread at the party I’m going to tonight, which means if I go in hungry, there’s a very good chance I’ll be setting myself up for failure.

That’s why before I arrive at the party tonight, I’ll be prepping a healthy dinner. I’ll be grilling an organic flank steak, while sautéing some organic broccoli in avocado oil and sea salt on low heat. Heating vegetables at a high temperature takes quite a bit of the nutrient content out of them, which is why I’ll only be lightly sautéing for flavor.

So there you have it! Three hacks to avoid flying off the rails tonight.

Enjoy the game!

Sincerely,

Coach Pete
