Weight Loss Tip: It’s Better to BE BETTER Than to Be Perfect!

Are you a perfectionist? If you’re anything like me (or at least how I used to be), then it’s very exhausting, isn’t it?

You set these ridiculously high standards for yourself, expect yourself to be perfect, and follow through on every particular phase of your plan. When something inevitably DOESN’T go according to plan, you freak out, you blame others, and sometimes, even yourself. Just one setback can completely derail your effort(s) in regards to that particular task, and depending on how hard you take this setback, it can completely derail you from your goal(s) altogether.

Does this sound familiar? If so, keep reading!

If you haven’t noticed, every message this week has been about mindset. We’ve gone over different ways to approach your weight loss journey from ‘the gold standard,’ which is nothing more than an off-the-shelf design to show you just a little bit of progress, while coaxing you to fork over lots of money for mediocre advice and lackluster results.

The strategies may seem hippy-dippy or overly simple, but who says every aspect of life is black and white, or has to be overly complicated?

I used to be a perfectionist. In fact, in some areas of my life, I still struggle with perfectionism. It’s gotten me far, don’t get me wrong, but because of the excess pressure(s) this way of thinking has placed upon me, there have been many times where I’ve not felt fulfilled or even a little proud when I’d make great strides towards reaching my goals.

Case in Point: I’ve been harking on my two year plateau all week long. I do this because you may be in a similar rut, and thus, you’re experiencing a similar degree of frustration that I did when I was dealing with mine.

When I was going through my plateau, I was a perfectionist. When the ideal amount of progress wasn’t being made, I’d quickly grow discouraged, I’d think all these negative things about myself, and I’d inevitably say ‘Screw it!’ for a week or two. This would set me back another week or two, and would obviously delay my ability to find what worked, and ultimately get to the promised land.

Six years may have been four, or three… Who knows?

The fact of the matter is, my excessive pride and the unnecessary burden I put on myself hindered my results before I got there. And I’m sure for you, particularly when it comes to your weight loss journey, you’ve gone through, or are currently going through, the same thing!

I really wish success came in a straight line…. But, it doesn’t! There are ups, downs, zigs and zags, and no matter how well prepared you are or what how noble your intentions, this will NEVER go perfectly according to plan.

A simple tweak you can make to your thinking is to accept the fact that you’re NEVER going to be perfect! To err is to be human, after all. You can go into your weight loss journey with the best intentions, the best preparation, the best guidance, etc., but if you expect both yourself and your journey to be perfect the entire time, then you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment and failure.

It may sound cliché, but instead, take things one day at a time! If you have an off-day nutritionally, or you skip a workout, don’t beat yourself up over it… Instead, use that as motivation to do better the next day, and make up for lost time.

By making small, gradual improvements to your new healthy lifestyle day-by-day, you’ll be well on your way to reaching your goals. And if you have a slip-up once in a while, then don’t worry — There’s always tomorrow to get back on the horse, and move back towards what you’d been doing up until the slip-up.

Next time you try to be perfect, stop yourself! It ain’t going to happen, so don’t even try! Small, gradual improvements day-by-day is the way to go to reach your short-term goals, and to sustain them over time. It’s not sexy, but it’s the truth!

Until tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Pete Weintraub
