Why Fitness Watches Are a Complete WASTE of Time and Money!

Are you looking into purchasing a fitness watch, but you’re not sure which brand to get? What if I told you that fitness watches, while nifty, aren’t necessary AT ALL on your health and weight loss journey, and in fact, are nothing more than a shiny DISTRACTION towards reaching your goals?

It’s a cool, cloudy day here on Long Island, and I’m just getting over a bout of food poisoning. My dad and I got lunch at a diner yesterday, and within literally 15 minutes of returning back to my parents’ house, my stomach really didn’t feel right. A few minutes later, the salad I’d ingested started coming out in a variety of ways… I’ll spare you the rest of the details, but long story short, it wasn’t pretty….

Not to worry — Today, I’m on the road to recovery, and if my recovery continues at this rate, I’ll be back to 100% tomorrow :-)

Now then, fitness watches! Why are these a complete waste of both time and money?

Well, for starters, they track a few things that really don’t affect your health or your results:

1) Calories Burned.

Calories should have absolutely NO say towards how much you eat, how much you move, or just how you live, in general!

2,000 calories of carbs are NOT the same as 2,000 calories of protein, which are also NOT the same as 2,000 calories of fat. Each macronutrient elicits a DIFFERENT insulin response, which in turn elicits a different degree of fat storage, blood sugar levels, etc.

With this in mind, what more does ‘Calories Burned’ show you than how hard you worked? You can get the same information by how hard you’re breathing, how much you’re sweating, etc.

2) Your Heart Rate.

Unless you have a heart condition, there’s really no reason for you to keep tabs on your heart rate. We’ll often give up on a workout long before we’d get to the point of a coronary embolism, which bares this little tidbit to consider, as well: Most of these watches are NOT accurate! Some are off by up to 30 beats per minute in EITHER direction!

If you do, indeed, have a heart condition, then using an inaccurate device can really mean the difference between being in your ‘green’ zone, or playing Russian Roulette with when your next heart attack will commence.

3) Steps.

Seriously, who gives a damn about how many steps you walk? I know I don’t!

While the general saying ‘The more you move, the better off you’ll be’ is true, you don’t need a step counter to tell you that, either. If you’ve been sitting at a desk staring at a screen all day, chances are you need to get up and move more! If you’ve been running from place to place, and don’t even remember the last time you sat for more than a few minutes at a time, I think your step count is just fine ;-)

Now, I know exactly what the defenders of fitness watches will say: ‘But, they keep me motivated to move more! Isn’t that important?!’

If you want to drop $100-$500 on a shiny toy, then by all means! Do you know what really matters MOST if you’re looking to make a healthy, sustainable and PERMANENT change?

1) Your Mindset.

I don’t give a damn how on point you are with your nutrition or your fitness — If your mind is NOT right in terms of how to handle the many curveballs life will throw at you, then you’re in big trouble!

2) Your Nutrition.

Exercise is nice, but let’s be honest — You can’t ‘work off’ a bad diet! This is cliché, but think of your body as a luxury car, and of the food going into it as fuel… If you’re the equivalent of a Porsche, are you really going to fuel it with ‘Regular?’ Have fun when that beauty starts to break down shortly into your lease or finance payments!

3) Consistency.

How do you stay consistent with a healthy lifestyle that involves healthy eating and regular exercise? By FINDING WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!!!

Is calorie counting, portion control or counting points something you can do for the rest of your life? If you answered yes, then you are a special breed of human, and I hope that you’ll donate your body to science so that we can analyze what’s so special about your brain.

For the rest of us humans, we have different tastes in food, different exercise preferences, and different goals! What works for you may not work for me, and vice versa. This is why you need to formulate a plan that works well for YOU and your lifestyle if you want any prayer of losing the weight, getting healthy, and STAYING THAT WAY!!!
