Aviation industry across the globe is expected to face a massive shortfall of pilots in the coming ten years, as per a recent report.

CAE, a Canadian firm predicted that to offset both the effect of retirement and industry growth, the world would need 255,000 new airline pilots as the global commercial fleet is expected to grow by 12,000 aircrafts to approximately 37,000 aircrafts in the coming 10 years. Which means that by 2027, approximately 440,000 active pilots will be needed against the current capacity of only 290,000. CAE also mentioned that per day on an average, 70 new type-rated pilots have to be produced across the globe to cope with the demand of high aircraft delivery rate.

If we look at the region-wise bifurcation, APAC is likely to see the sturdiest growth in demand of pilots as the fleet of operating aircrafts is expected to increase considerably in size. While the Americas can expect the maximum number of retirements across the globe. CAE said that 180,000 first officers will need to be promoted to the rank of captain of which around 90,000 would be to replace the retiring captains, apart from 255,000 new first officers.

North America is reported to have a high percentage of older pilots as in the late 1980s recruitment activity curtailed due to the merger of network carriers. U.S. region is already facing pilot supply issues since the introduction of the stiffer rule to become a professional airline pilot by necessitating 1,500 total flight hours. CAE also stated that countries such as India and China will need even more pilots as the aircraft sector is expanding there to support rapid economic growth.
