Welcome to installment #49 of GetSomeJoy’s Daily Breakfast Situation, your weekday check-in with recipes, joy-flavored stories, and wellness tools.

You know what you need in your life?

Aside from love, water, and Janet Jackson?

These sweet potato cinnamon rolls by Sweet Potato Soul. They’re vegan if that’s your kink.

Jenné says that just because they’re vegan, they’re not intended to be a healthy alternative to non-vegan cinnamon rolls. Don’t lie to yourself.

Sweet enough to make you remember what a mess you’d make with the icing from a cinnamon roll as a little kid. Delicious enough to put your “healthy diet” rules on suspension for a few minutes, and then reject any bit of regret.

Just enjoy the damn cinnamon rolls. Be “righteous” and “healthy” elsewhere.

A few things to moisturize your spirit:

  • Did they show up with a whole-ass baby? Were there a grip or rack of niggas, hella niggas, a heap of niggas, or fifty-leven niggas…and then some? Was it hot as a mug/motherfucker or cold as a bitch?
There are many ways to measure and interpret the world. (via @sagebeatlove on Twitter)

Was he musty or musty as fuck?

I get it, sweet potato pie is the holy grail of African American holidays, but for me and my household, pumpkin pie will always be at the forefront.

I think we wanted to ask that question of all the characters: Are we gonna be OK if we have to co-parent together? Are we gonna be OK if the man I want to be with isn’t? Are we gonna be OK if people see me as a joke? Am I gonna be OK if I can’t get out of my own way in relationships?

  • 50 years later, the first Asian-American muppet just moved onto Sesame Street.

When ‘Soul Train’ first aired in 1971, there had never been a show like it. Fifty years later, that’s still true. So this week, we’re passing the mic to our friends at NPR’s It’s Been a Minute podcast, who did a deep dive into the age of Black joy — and Black flyness — that Soul Train kicked off.

See you tomorrow.
