If you’ve been on Social Media these past days, chances are you’ve heard of an AI tool called ChatGPT, which applies machine learning to solve any problem you give it. Incredible, right?

Well, it’s truly an amazing tool, because it makes our lives easier and more efficient in most cases.

This is surely a huge step towards AI development and Machine Learning.

However, its users have already found some major drawbacks.

Although ChatGPT gives detailed and in-depth answers, and makes us happy at first, we’re left feeling bad/unfulfilled later on, as we didn’t put in the work or research the subject ourselves.

However, its drawback can turn out to be much more harmful than we think.

As Chess’ popularity has significantly increased throughout this decade, more chess players are eager to gather knowledge in order to gain a decisive edge over their rivals.

However, this is where many go terribly wrong (This may ruin your Chess forever).

Some players believe that chess engines (such as Stockfish) are the best teachers, so they study random lines without thinking.

This is a mistake. Never do this.

No matter how good the engine is, it may explain the moves but won’t teach you how to be creative, how to be intuitive, how to make crucial decisions, and so on.

This behaviour may be effective for a short period (rating increase), but as time passes, it’s guaranteed to fail.

Such players have a harder time being creative, intuitive and decisive, as they’re hugely relying on an external source.

The truth is, as ChatGPT just appeared, I can guarantee that some players will run to this tool in order to research their common Chess problems, such as “How to be more creative”.

Even though the program will explain it to you and be more helpful than engines, it will surely damage your Chess if you use it like this.

Just like engines, ChatGPT is an external source.

If you don’t think about Chess positions with your brain and mind, time after time, your abilities will start to rot.

The absolute best way to use this AI would be the following:

1. Start Chess study sessions with 0 external help.

2. Give your creativity a place to wander, to find crucial, positional ideas.

3. If you’re struggling in a certain aspect, take time to research common fixes, then apply the knowledge.

4. If problems continue, only then you should use this tool.

5. Once your problem is fixed, go back to step 1. This AI is addictive, so be aware!

That was all I wanted to share with you today. I hope that your Chess finds the mojo that it needs.
