I’m not convinced that memorizing the colour of each chess square matters, but I came up with a system to remember them. The 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th letters of the alphabet (odd) are a, c, e, and g. The 2nd, 4th, 6tb and 8th letters of the alphabet (even) are b, d, f, and h.

For dark squares, the following is true:
— the letter and number are both odd OR
— the letter and the number are both even

For light squares, the following is true:
— the letter is even and the number is odd OR
— the letter is odd and the number is even

The Chess Vision Trainer app available only on Android has a “Color Memorization” drill where it gives you the square coordinate and you specify if it’s a dark or light square. It also has a “Coordinates Training” drill where it shows the coordinate and you tap the square on the chessboard. I haven’t done this for long but I’ve not seen how knowing the color helps me identify the square more quickly.

Do you believe memorizing the color of every square on the board helps you improve your chess?
