The youth makes up over 50% of the Indian population. Every year, there are more graduates and an increasing shortage of jobs. In the midst of this dilemma, employers, hiring managers and recruiters are peeved by the lack of commitment and skills in graduate talent pools. To aggravate the situation further, recent graduate surveys have found that skilled graduates would rather stay unemployed than accept a job that they are overqualified for. Employment mismatch is a serious issue. Below we have highlighted key problems that employers and their teams face when hiring college graduates.

Attracting Talented Candidates

With advancing technology and growing industries, the competition for hiring fresh top talent is fierce. Companies go to lengths to make their work environment less stressful and provide benefits for all their employees. Even with all the perks, companies struggle to bring in qualified graduates.

Retention Issues

Companies that are successful at attracting top talents may have passed one hurdle, but a bigger one awaits them. Retaining these over-eager Millennial generation is challenging. It’s no secret that the youth require a more rewarding work experience to keep them engaged long term. Most graduates do not remain at their first job for more than two years and are predicted to have over 15 employers in their life time. As Baby Boomers and Gen X employees begin retiring, attrition rates are increasing. Employing youths for long term is the only way to keep companies afloat but restarting the hiring process over again is a hassle.

Skills Gap

This problem is pretty self explanatory and also the most accepted rationale by employers for not being able to hire quality employees. The skills gap refers to the imbalance of hard and soft skills among candidates. Employers look for individuals who are all rounded. Acquisition of the highest scoring graduates ensure that their hard skills are intact, but often times they lack soft skills such as communication and teamwork. Likewise, lower scoring candidates may be equipped with a strong set of soft skills, but lack the knowledge of operating specific software.

Problematic Sourcing

The skills gap is real. But there are several ways to counter it from training to better sourcing. There are more funds allocated to sourcing than training at several SMEs than MNCs. Both SMEs and MNCs conduct college placements and job portals like LinkedIn or Internshala. Increasing your brand is a primary way to source new fresh recruits easily. Unfortunately with thousands of companies posting jobs on job portals, employer brand strategies are not maximized. College placements bring in a significant amount of recruits to companies every year, but it narrows employee demographics to a single or few universities. As a result, employee skills and attitudes are restricted to specific educational backgrounds.

Inefficient Hiring Process

All in all, the length of the recruiting processes does not match the quality of candidates being on-boarded. From sourcing, screening, interviews and making the final offer, several weeks go by just to hire handful of employees. Conducting on-campus drives at multiple universities across the country can also become a hassle. With so many applications, HR and Recruiting teams struggle to screen and interview the ideal candidates.

Lack of Data Analytics and HR Skills

There are several technological tools available to recruiters today, however only some of them really know how to use these tools to their maximum potential. Without utilizing tools that are readily available, competitors are more likely to use their analytical information to source candidates from the right places. If hiring decisions are backed up with statistical analysis and trends of your past recruitment strategies, it will result in a more a rewarding candidate search.
