5 False Beliefs That Are Holding You Back

Throughout your life you have developed certain beliefs. Your beliefs are your personal convictions that help you make decisions. These beliefs are a frame through which you look at everything and determine the way you live your life. While some of them might be helpful and true, many of them are limiting and false, and are preventing you from living a great life.

Here are 5 of the most common false beliefs you should be aware of:

1. I have no luck in life.

Why would the universe choose you to be the unlucky one? Everyone is born with a chance to live a happy life. It is up to you to use the resources you have been given– the ones that you have now within you. The reason why you feel unlucky is because of the negative thoughts you have about reality. If the universe really picked the ’lucky’ ones, those who were born poor would always remain poor, while the rich would always remain rich. Many success stories prove that this is not the case. You must realize that the universe wants you to be happy and succeed, but you have got to go out and create your own opportunities for happiness. Instead of complaining about what you don’t have, focus on what you do have. Gratitude is the first step towards loving your life. Remember: ‘If you love life, it will love you back.’

2. In the pursuit of wealth there is little time left for everything else in life.

Being busy doesn’t necessarily mean being productive. The belief that being busy is a sign of success is extremely prevalent in our society, making us think that we can’t have it all. The richest people in the world always find time for relaxation — because it’s not the hours you put into work, it’s how productive you are during those hours. Don’t let this false belief convince you that you don’t have enough time for both — just be focused and efficient, there is nothing more to it.

3. I am too old to get rich.

Your age is never a limiting factor, but your belief that you are too old is. We could give you a dozen examples of people that got rich in their 50s or later, which basically proves this belief wrong. The real reason you think it’s too late to start is because that’s what society taught you. You are made to believe that you should have everything figured out in life by the time you’re 30 years old. The truth is, the older you are, the easier it should be to succeed, because you become wiser and more experienced with age.

4. If you are rich in love, happiness and health, you don’t need money.

This belief is deeply rooted in our culture, and it’s meant to make people think that being rich blocks spirituality. Too many spiritual traditions advocate poverty and portray money as dirty and immoral. What it really is, is a justification for keeping people in unreasonable conditions. Of course, money can’t buy you happiness. We are not arguing that it can. However, money and spirituality are not mutually exclusive. Money is necessary to experience a high standard of living, to stay healthy and to help and take care of others. In addition to love and health, you also need money, as we live in a world where it matters and is necessary.

5. I can’t become rich by doing what l love.

This may be the most common deception there is. Doing what you love is the surest way to be successful, because you will not fake passion and you will never lack enthusiasm. Actor and Comedian Jim Carrey once said: ‘You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.’ Don’t choose a profession only because someone said it is profitable — in today’s world, things change quickly, as do the profitability of certain professions. Moreover, you might hate every day of your life if you choose to do something that genuinely does not interest you at all. Find your passion and create something you believe is necessary in the world — the money will follow.

We are all victims of negative self-talk from time to time. Even the most confident people among us doubt themselves sometimes. Negative thoughts creep easily in our subconscious, creating a distorted image of reality. Your mind is a powerful tool, so don’t let it limit you — use it as an engine towards your ultimate destination — success.
