Saturday Night Live Highlight Reel: March 4th, 2017

Lately, Saturday Night Live has been a hub of heavy social and political commentary, but has kept the format of charming, silly little skits. This week’s episode served up another healthy dose of that. And Octavia Spencer straight-up slayed as host.

This week’s cold open of Saturday Night Live featured a not-so-sentimental throwback to Forrest Gump in which Jeff Sessions (Kate McKinnon) sits on the iconic Forrest park bench, blabbering word vomit to everyone with ears. Of course, his comments lack the beauty and simplicity of “life is like a box of chocolates,” but he did get some important stuff off his chest.

On the Weekend Update: behold Laura Parson’s take on Trump’s decision to take away the right of trans students to use the bathrooms of their choice (ugh, seriously Trump?).

And this week’s edition of the Weekend Update introduces two new characters! Enter Eric and Donald Trump Jr., two hilarious dinguses that almost have a loveablity factor due to their sheer stupidity.

SNL gave a much needed middle finger to the dudes who take advantage of the current political climate by using faux-feminism to pick up chicks.

Our personal shoutout to whoever’s idea it was to make a fake movie trailer about an actual Republican who *gasp* actually stands up to Donald Trump. And who should they choose to be this brave hero that America needs? Oh — no idea. Because that is (probably) never going to happen.

As always, there was a musical interlude between comedy bits so that we could catch our breath and wipe away any tears of laughter (what’s the opposite of comic relief?). For everyone who doesn’t already listen religiously to Father John Misty, we hope you caught the smooth, cool drone of his vocal performance last night.

It wouldn’t be an episode of SNL without some good old fashioned fun, sans politics. Like this bit about the stellar customer service at a place called “Sticky Bun” that I will never, ever be going to:
