The Sucker-Punch Heard ’Round the World
Everything was proceeding pretty normally into the eighth round of last weekend’s title bout. José Uzcátegui was challenging Andre Dirrell for the Super Middleweight World Title.
Here’s a solid exchange from both fighters…
A missed left hook from Dirrell …
And a huge finishing shot from Uzcátegui at the bell …
Dirrell’s corner was livid about that last shot that sent their fighter into a heap on the mat since it came after the final bell signaled the end of the round. The referee was forced to call off the match, even though the punch occurred after the final bell.
One of Dirrell’s assistant trainers, who also happens to be his uncle, had something to say about the way the fight ended…
After the first sucker-punch, he went for the follow up!
We couldn’t believe how long it took the other trainers to get into the ring to help…
The trainer, Leon Lawson Jr., has been charged with first- and second-degree assault and could be jailed for 25 years if found guilty!
In any case, Dirrell was awarded the belt by default when officials decided Uzcátegui’s late hit was out of line. Or maybe they just didn’t want his uncle coming after them.
