Now for a piece of pub quiz trivia: Angel Islington is the only property on the Monopoly board named after a single building. So what’s the reason for its prominence, giving its name as it does not only to our nearby tube station and an area of London, but also to the third-cheapest property on the Monopoly board? Some accounts say that Victor Watson, the managing director of Waddington’s, met his secretary at a pub called the Angel to discuss the selection — then celebrated the fact by including it on the Monopoly board. Fittingly, the famous coaching inn that stood on the Great North Road is now a Co-operative Bank.
