Chalkboard Education Wins Seedstars Accra 2016
Every year since 2013, Seedstars World has been in Accra, finding startups to pitch and stand the chance of winning a trip to Geneva to compete for the Seedstars World Prize. The yearly competition is open to startups that are less than 2 years, old and have raised less than $500k in funding.
On Sunday, 21st August, 2016, 9 startups pitched at Impact Hub Accra, to compete for the Seedstars Accra title.
Last night’s competition was as fierce as its judges. The jury comprised Mansa Ayisi-Okyere, Executive Secretary, African Entrepreneurs Hub, Ethel Cofie, Director EDEL Technologies, Leticia Brown, Investor Relations at GAIN, and Ato Ulzen-Appiah, Director of the GhanaThink Foundation. The event also included a keynote by CEO of last year’s Seedstars Accra winner Asoriba, Nana Agyeman-Prempeh.
Here are the teams that pitched and a short note on each of them.
Chalkboard: A startup that offers plug-and-play mobile learning solutions that work on any device and without Internet connection.
HQ Renewable Tech: A startup dedicated to bringing dead and neglected solar and automotive batteries to life.
Nubian Oryx: Low-cost, low-carbon urban housing in African cities using sustainable earthbag building technology.
Cocktail insights: A social media analytics and marketing tool that enables eCommerce businesses and merchants maximise the returns of their social media marketing.
Then there was a break.
SynCommerce: SynCommerce provides you an effective and easy to use tool to manage and synchronize inventory and orders across multiple sales channels.
Gosun Stove: A startup that develops clean, safe and practical fuel-free cooking technology to feed the world, while bolstering energy independence and social equity.

Landmapp: A platform that offers affordable land rights documentation for smallholder farmers, and builds accurate data profiles to broker additional services.
Krinotech Solutions: Developers of MobiSave, a web and native mobile application that helps users to save and invest money while making regular calls from their devices.

At the end of the pitches and after the fierce jury had concluded their deliberations, Chalkboard Education was adjudged winner, with Landmapp and TechAide coming 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Chalkboard receives an investment of $50k, and stands a chance of winning $500k investment, when they pitch the global summit in Geneva. They also get to attend the Seedstars regional summit.
It was a great night for the entrepreneurs that pitched, and the audience involved. Obviously, we are getting better at pitching, and building products. It’s a journey, and we’re on our way. Congrats to all the teams that pitched, and to Adrien Bouillot and the team at Chalkboard, we say, “Rock On!”
