GT Bank Introduces myghpay, a New Payments Service

Ghanaian banks seem to be responding to customer interest these days. As more independent developers and startups are providing payment services, most banks in Ghana are gaining interest in building similar services — the latest being myghpay, from GT Bank.

As group head of Retail Banking Cynthia Bilson, explains,

“myghpay”is an integrated and secure online platform designed by GTBank to enable individuals, businesses, organizations, associations etc to collect or make payments.
Presently, anyone, customer of the bank or not, intending to make payments to Dstv, ECG, Ghana Water, Surfline etc can visit myghpay.com and pay with a Visa or MasterCard, MTN Mobile Money, gh-link enabled card or from your GTBank account.

The site also lists a number of educational institutions, airlines, maritime businesses, hotels, insurance, investments and other institutions that payments could be made to from the comfort of homes, offices or anywhere in the world. Employers can also pay employee SSNIT contributions via myghpay.com, while individuals purchase airtime top up for Vodafone, Airtel, MTN and Tigo.

Android users have not been left out, as the company has an Android app which can achieve a similar purpose. Sorry, iOS and Windows (and Blackberry, if that’s still a thing) users; you can still use the website. And that’s yet another point where the team will miss out on customers.

This platform is open to the general public. Log onto the platform on your computer or mobile phone, select a service and carry out transactions after which payments can be made with the Visa card, MasterCard, Gh-link Card and mobile wallet.

This new service doesn’t seem to be so different from other services already on the market, and with a larger market share. However, they seem to have quite a number of institutions already on board, and that could be a good advantage, for the bank. I’d wish to know how its adoption will go.
