When I developed the University course description for “Decoding Dr. Dre,” Missy Elliott was one of the individuals I thought of first as representing the spirit of Ghetto Genius. Elle Magazine’s June cover story shows you why. This article is a lengthy profile by Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah of the multi-dimensional, multi-talented Elliott. The whole article is worth a read, but we wanted to highlight this comment by the author, who describes Elliott’s approach to “black innovation, black America’s ability to overcome all odds and create, [which is] a kind of passed-along technology.” It’s exactly this “passing along,” this generous sharing and innovative making-do that motivates Ghetto Genius Universe. And, just for a bit of fun, here’s Missy Elliott, James Corden and Michelle Obama in “Carpool Karaoke.”
