Lavar Ball, the Enigma

Lavar Ball is the father we all want. His son, Lonzo Ball, was just drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers with the second pick in the 2017 NBA Draft — but this article isn’t about him. It’s about the man, the monster, and the master of the Big Baller Family.

He’s made enemies of Lebron James and been deemed by George Raveling — the marketing director at Nike — as “the worst thing to happen to basketball in the last hundred years”.

The 6 foot 6, 320 pound, 48-year-old behemoth sounds like an imposing beast on paper. His interviews and media presence showcase a different side, reminding the world of the phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover”. He’s a father that wants the best for his children — the immensely talented trio of Lonzo, LaMelo, and LiAngelo.

He doesn’t shy away from attention as evident in his appearance on WWE Raw this past Monday, June 26 where he— literally and figuratively — ran towards it.

He’s the type of father who says his kids are worth a billion dollars in shoe deals and being better basketball players than Lebron James and Russell Westbrook. He says that he can beat Micheal Jordan in a basketball game 1-on-1.

Underneath the extravagant media shenanigans and constant controversy is an enigma that needs to be protected. His Big Baller Brand is poised to be a success (with Lonzo’s ZO2 shoe) and will encourage other people to work for themselves, not corporations. His drive for independence and patriarchal pride make him a star in his own right.
