The top 6 types of product sales to watch

The best after-Christmas sales don’t always start after Christmas, but for most retailers, December 26th is the day to tune in for new promotions. Don’t be surprised if you see some of these sales launch before Christmas. As odd as running an “after-Christmas Sale” before Christmas sounds, few people will argue with a great deal, whatever it might be called.

There’s no doubt that this is good timing: a sale immediately after you get your hands on a shiny new gift card is a hard thing to ignore. Here are our top 6 types of product sales to keep an eye out for in 2017.

1. Clothing — One of the most frequently discounted items to shop for during this time is clothing. Why? Well, clothing styles follow trends, and trends come and go quickly! Some clothing retailers like Nike, Macy’s, Gap, J. Crew, and and others have offered at least 15% to 25% off as part of their after-Christmas sales events in past years. Old Navy got the jump on the sale this year and was running after-Christmas sales ads as early as December 18th!
2. Sporting Goods — Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, and Dick’s Sporting Goods all have offered some type of sale in the post-Christmas time period. But don’t forget big box retailers who often stock the same items. Amazon and Walmart often match these sales one for one when the product is available to all merchants.
3. Furniture and Home — Retailers like Target, Pier 1 Imports, and Lowes, have been known to knock down prices on large items like furniture, household furnishings, and home decor. If you’re thinking about buying a big appliance, after-Christmas might be the right time.
4. Electronics — Many stores offer great deals on refurbished, or nearly-new electronics, like cameras, video games, iphones, and watches. Amazon in particular has been known for great deals on Amazon Warehouse items. While TVs often approach their best prices on Black Friday, you can still save significant money on them after Christmas. And check out the Apple store too — they have been known to steeply discount the previous models of iPhones during this post-holiday period.
5. Gift Cards — Boring you say? These may not be the most exciting Christmas gifts, but they are certainly the most popular. If you can find discounts built into a gift card, you can lock in that discount and spend it whenever you want during the year. Is a must-have item being released in 2018? Perhaps your best bet is to grab a heavily discounted gift card.
6. Toys — Amazon has in the past shaved up to 80% of popular toys in after-Christmas sales events. The new Star Wars toys are a likely contender for popular toys this year, along with LEGO and Barbie deals.
7. Christmas decorations — You might be planning ahead, or planning far behind, but Christmas decorations aren’t worth that much to retailers after the holiday. Lowes has previously cut prices by as much as 90%! Stock up now, because 364 days later, time will tell that you’re a very smart shopper.
