Faith in the Ocean of Life
Trusting in the Universal Laws to Meet Your Every Need
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Have you ever visited the beach and watched a child dig in the sand? Or maybe you remember doing it when you were young?
If you dig deep enough in the sand, the hole begins to fill with seawater and stays at a certain level, the level of the water table. Of course, when you are right at the beach, the water table is at sea level (or just slightly above).
But no matter how big you dig your hole, or how fast you try to remove the water, the water level remains the same. If you take out a lot of water at once, the water level will drop momentarily but then slowly rise again to that same level.
The reason this happens is because, although there may be a temporary fall in the level when you first scoop out some of the water, the ocean that provides the water through the sand and into the hole is virtually limitless.
And the seawater always seeks its own level.
Poverty, Need, Lack… is the “Hole”
For all practical purposes, we live in a closed system here on earth, or, if you want to look even more broadly, the universe. The universe works in the same way the ocean works in that hole at the beach.
The universe always seeks its own level, the level of equilibrium, of balance, within itself.
If you remove some material from one area and place it in another area, the universe/nature/God will attempt to refill the “hole” with the most needful and available resource. The “hole” may not fill as fast as the seawater in our beach example, but it works nonetheless.
This is one of the greatest benefits of the Gift Economy. This is why it is far superior to every other economy, whether active or ancient or proposed.
The Gift solves the problem of poverty, because the one who is in deepest need is the one most likely to be gifted; he only has to build his own social capital by contributing what he is able to contribute to his neighbors.
Sometimes his contribution may only be a smile or a kind word, but even that is not without value to the world, at least not in a world of Gift. And he will receive his necessities in proportion to his acts of love in the same way as everyone else.
A resource always seeks the point of greatest need, the largest “hole”. We can clearly see that in nature everyday. But in the issue of economic poverty, there is something obstructing that “desire” of the universal law.
And what is obstructing that universal law is our current economic system.
We must stop fighting the “universal tide”; it is exhausting.
Faith in Universal Law
In between the time that the matter is removed and the time that the resource is replaced, the “hole” is patiently waiting.
The “hole” has faith that it will be filled, just as a lower point in the river awaits the water.
It is the same with the Gift Economy.
At some point, when you begin to gift to others, but your local gifting network is still small and weak, there may be a time when you question whether or not your needs will be reciprocated as a gift. This is where faith begins.
It will take time for the Gift to be as large as an ocean or to fill a hole in the sand as easily. But grow, it will; and at the proper time, the return to the giver will be as immediate as he needs it to be.
In that day, faith will no longer be required.
We live in a Universe that is just. It is bound by the Law of Sowing and Reaping. If you really consider this, you will quickly realize that it cannot be any other way without imploding on Itself.
And the Law of Cause and Effect is absolute.
You know this to be true, not only in your mind, not only in your heart, but in every experience you have ever had in Life.
I want to encourage you to advance toward the Vision of a better future, the restoration of peace and community within your world through the Gift.
And yes, in case you were wondering, I am writing this post to encourage myself to always keep the faith of the Vision received…
… and the Vision that you are, hopefully, beginning to receive as well.
This is my message to me.
And you.
“The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn; the bird waits in the egg; and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities.”
— James Allen
