Letter from the editor
Hello, my name is Justin Thor Simenson and I am the editor of gig magazine. Medium just launched a new feature for publications called Letters (think of an email newsletter). They also show up on our page so you might be reading this in your email or on Medium. I plan to use this feature similar to “Letter from the editor” in traditional publications. I will talk about the happenings with gig, things planned, things changed, etc.
It has been just a little over a month since we made the move to Medium and it is feeling like a good fit. Our latest issue, and first exclusively on Medium, featured The Band of Heathens out of Austin, Texas at a show in Albuquerque. It was well received and if you missed it you can check it out here
So far gig magazine is a one man show. I have been photographing, interviewing, editing, etc. each issue. There is one exception, in the original print version of issue #6 I also featured photographs by Jesse Raine Littlebird.
Since the beginning I have had visions of gig magazine publishing issues written and photographed by other people. This has been difficult for a few reasons, but now that we are on Medium it is A LOT easier. There would be no way to pay for these issues since gig magazine has no income source. Of course the copyright of the words and photographs remain their creators, they would just be giving gig magazine permission to publish them here on Medium.
What I am looking for:
- 5–10 well executed photographs of a band’s live performance.
- An interview, about 700 words long, with a unique perspective on the band being covered.
- Hyperlinks to the band, venue, promoter, etc. webpages.
- To make sure the band is aware that the interview and photographs will be published please provide contact information so I can verify with them.
- If you are a writer collaborating with a photographer or visa versa, which is totally cool, please provide the other persons contact information so I can verify.
