We recently sat down with the VP of Marketing at Mooala Brands, Jordan Campbell, to learn more about their incredible business that is revolutionizing the plant-based milk industry and hiring contractors to help grow their business. A little about you:

GW: Introduce yourself and your business.

JC: I’m Jordan Campbell — VP Marketing at Mooala Brands. Mooala is a leading maker of premium, organic, dairy-free milks and creamers. Mooala has become widely esteemed for our full suite of USDA-certified organic and family-friendly plant-based milks and creamers. We are best known for our breakthrough Bananamilk, which is nut-free, dairy-free and contains no added sugar. Mooala is available nationwide in grocery stores such as Wegmans, Kroger, Whole Foods, Walmart and Albertsons-Safeway.

GW: What is your business’s mission?

JC: Our mission is to make goodness for goodness’ sake.

GW: How did you decide to start your business?

JC: Jeff Richards, our Founder and CEO, launched Mooala due to his own lactose intolerance and his inability to find a quality non-dairy milk alternative he wanted to drink. Our recipes were crafted and perfected in his very own kitchen.

GW: When did you know contractors would be an important part of your workforce?

JC: With a first-to-market product like Bananamilk, sampling and experiential events were an imperative component of our marketing initiatives. Since our corporate team couldn’t be present in markets across the U.S., we needed to lean on contractors to be our market experts and brand evangelists. Our contractors are our eyes and ears in their markets, and they provide actionable consumer and market feedback.

GW: How is your company different than your competitors?

JC: Our plant-based milks and creamers are organic, non-gmo and made with real ingredients like organic bananas and organic almonds. We have a friendly and approachable “Mooala Koala” mascot, and we offer quality beverages at a family-friendly price point.

GW: Where will your company be in 5 years?

JC: As the plant-based market continues to accelerate, we aim to increase our market share, both in new retail expansion as well as growth within our current footprint.

GW: What key factors have led to your success?

JC: Our success has been driven by changing consumer habits: consumers are interested in buying quality food and beverages that are organic, non-gmo and made with real ingredients. On a macro level, the entire plant-based market is growing, as some consumers are moving away from dairy completely, and others are adopting ‘flexitarian’ diets that incorporate more plant-based products.

GW: What advice do you have for businesses who employ contractors?

JC: First, spend the extra time up front to find contractors who believe in your mission and your products. They will produce better results truly advocate for your brand. Second, once you have those rockstar contractors, value them and treat them like a team member, not just outsourced help. Some of the best contractors have been with us since the beginning and prioritize Mooala over other brands they work with.

GW: What problem(s) were you trying to solve with our product?

JC: We needed a turnkey, all-in-one solution for paying our contractors and consolidating reporting.

GW: How does our product or service stand out from other options?

JC: Gig Wage made it simple for us. We love the intuitive interface, the simplicity of payment — and now the addition of 1099 tax documentation for the IRS. Everything we need is in one place.

GW: What made you happiest about working with our company? What is your biggest success story?

JC: We feel very ‘heard’ by the Gig Wage team. Early on, we asked for an additional piece of functionality, and they were able to integrate it into their system. Anytime we encounter issues, their customer service team is helpful and efficient at resolving the issue.

We are THANKFUL and PROUD to have Mooala Brands as our customer. We have loved watching their business grow over the years and will continue working to help Mooala Brands pay, manage, and support their contractors.
