- Natural gas is a non-renewable energy source, which is located deep below the earth’s surface. For millions of years, the remains of carbon-based life forms, such as plants and animals, formed thick layers that, when exposed to high temperature and pressure, changed the composition of carbon to form coal, oil and natural gas.

- Methane is a major component of natural gas and is considered the cleanest of fossil fuels.

- Burning one molecule of methane in the presence of oxygen releases one molecule of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and two molecules of H2O (water).

- Compared to a modern coal-fired power plant, a natural gas-fired power plant produces 50–60% less CO2 per unit of electricity produced.
